Thinking about flowers

I’ve heard of edible flowers and have seen some used on cakes and stuff. But I didn’t know that some people throw them into salads and soups and other dishes. There are actually recipes for flower salads and even carrot cake with thyme flowers. Mmmmm carrot cake, I’d try that one. Might not be bad.

One thing I read was giving tips on how to use flowers. It said to “carefully expel any wildlife by giving them a good shake or a wipe with kitchen paper - only rinse if absolutely necessary”. Excuse me, wildlife? Things have undoubtedly been crawling all over it. I am not just going to shake it off and throw the flower into my food. “Only rinse if absolutely necessary”? No way, I am drowning those things under heavy spray before it goes anywhere near my food. I mean, flowers were designed to attract all sorts of bugs!

Why cook with flowers anyway? Don’t they taste weird? Wouldn’t it be like eating an air freshner? I’ve never acquired a taste for fancy gourmet food. Wouldn’t it be much better to send flowers instead? Or grow them, even better.

Speaking of growing flowers, my sweety has done wonders with our garden. So many different colors, shapes and textures. I should take a picture and post it. I’m not a big garden person, but there’s something about an abundance of life growing so happily in your yard that just invokes a sense of joy.
