Stumped

In our neighborhood, the city decided to chop down a bunch of the beautiful trees that lined one of the blocks. I guess the tree roots were causing sidewalks to lift up, and possibly other damage. I hate that the trees are gone now, but there are now several piles of wood along the sidewalks for anyone to take. Some are good-sized stumps that can be used as rustic stools for sitting on, so we decided to take a couple. Damn those things are HEAVY! The first one I took was easily over 100 pounds, and I had a lot of trouble moving it with the dolly (the semi-flat tires didn’t help). The second one was more manageable, but still quite heavy.

In order to lighten them up so we can actually move these “stools” around, I want to hollow them out. I started at first with a drill and a chisel. After an hour of making way too much noise and too little progress, I decided that a chainsaw would allow me to actually finish the job. Problem is, I don’t have one. So now I have to shop for one. I’m just going to get a cheap electric one because we’ve never needed a chainsaw for anything before, and I hate the noisy gas motors.

I’ve been looking at what’s available online at Home Depot, and notice that many of them have a safety guard at the tip of the chainsaw. It makes me wonder how I’m supposed to dip the chainsaw into the tree stump to hollow it out, and if I get one with no safety guard, am I going to end up hacking off a limb? Is there a better way to hollow out a tree stump?
