Situational Soundtracks

Music is a very personal thing. What I like you might hate. Lists of favorite bands are meaningless. I hate it when people do that. Is it supposed to mean something to me? Music invokes things in people. A simple list of favorites tells me nothing other than you like it for some reason. I like to glimpse into a blogger’s personality, what makes them tick.

I need different types of music for different situations. What would we call these, situational soundtracks?

  • When I’m doing dishes and other housework, I like to have some Blues playing. The more sliding electric guitar the better. It just makes the work funner, and it helps to hear someone singing about things way worse than dusting.

  • At work I often have to force myself to concentrate, especially if the task is tedious enough to make you scream. Trance music helps me do this.  Its hypnotic beats help me focus my thoughts while blocking out surrounding conversations.

  • When I’m going on one of my power walks, my little MP3 player fills my ears with various tunes.  Fun 80s songs and dance music help get me going and maintain my pace.

  • When I’m driving to or from work I often like to get in touch with my inner gangsta by bumping to R&B and some rap. I get down with my bad self. I look like a complete dork, yes, but with the bass thumping I am a bad mofo! This only happens if I am driving by myself. I embarrass easily.

  • If I’m driving and I feel very tired, my inner gangsta is usually nowhere to be found. Likely out knocking over a 7-11. In that case I prefer some smooth jazz to soothe my soul.

I’m curious to know if anyone has different musical tastes when they’re by themselves as opposed to being around others? Or if music helps you accomplish things like it does for me?
