I don't get it

Two things I would like people to explain to me.

1) Why is the logo for American Express a Roman centurion? I may not remember all my history from school, but I’m quite sure the Romans never made it out this far. I mean, it’s American Express, right?

2) On American Idol, why do they make the losers sing the very song that got them voted off in the first place?? Is it so they can show “character” in the face of utter embarrassment? That’s just mean and pointless. And annoying. If they didn’t sound good the first time, the second time around is going to be even worse with them choking up and all. I just don’t get it.
