That’s so funny...because my husband said the same thing to me a couple of months ago! lol He wants to start a coffee shop in Stillwater, OK (near OSU)...only...neither one of us knows how to make espresso!
I think the concept of owning some kind of establishment is much more attractive than the reality.
Having good food and atmosphere isn’t the hard part. It’s balancing your finances and keeping up with all the irritating details of ownership that sink most small businesses.
I’ve always wanted to do a coffee shop with sandwiches that was part of a large comic book store and LAN party area.
Gah that’d be fun. I think I’ll say a bakery. Everytime I’m in publix, I can’t help thinking how fun it’d be to work in that section
One of my favorite shops in NY was a breakfast/deli/bakery type place. I could definitely have fun with that lol.
Avi, ooh LAN parties! You’d need to have keyboards with those plastcic overs on them because you know people are going to spill stuff all over them, especially in a coffe shop.
Liane, I think bakers would have lots of friends because they want free samples, heehee.
Yeah, and we’d have to worry about people spilling things on the towers, but I think it would be awesome.
I would love to do a coffee/bakery/book shop...kind of like a little Barnes N Noble. It would be a place that once a week has open mic or something like that. Lots of comfy seats...wait...it sounds oddly familiar :O
I think I’d do great with a bakery....
but I know a lot about fine dining and working a 5 star restaurant, so maybe that....
Or it could be a fine restaurant with exquisite pastries and other high end bakery items!
I once went to a coffee shop that had antique and gifty items all over, a little library, and every Thursday, Friday, Saturday, they had a live jazz band. It was the coolest thing.
I want to open up a ‘what-not’ shop (you know? all kinds of little gifty items and interesting things?) with a little coffee area attached. Nothing big. I’ve been looking for an interesting property for two years now. Still no dice.
You should just take over the shop you went to that you liked. Ask them if you’ll sell to you. Be a pest and keep asking. Go so often that they’ll sell just so they won’t have to see you again, heehee!
If you open up any one of those on the list - kiss your life as you know it goodbye. Too many long hours, but if you like that kind of thing - go for it.
2 more food ideas:
Catering - I think I would start slow and cater a few select events (friends/family) just to get your feet wet. That way you are not totally committed if you decide it is not for you.
Mobile - do the fairs and event stuff, around here you just need a mobile unit and a mobile health department permit. Work when and where you want with that kind of thing too. My old neighbors used to do just weekend events and made more than they did with a full time dump truck company with way less work.
BTW - I hate coffee too.

Unfortunately, it was four hours away, in another town. Bummer.
we have always wanted to run a b&b.
my wife loves to cook and serve people, i love to clean (yes...i actually enjoy it). i also enjoy serving and hosting.
we wanted to buy our favorite b&b in ptown when it came on the market. just couldn’t swing the 1.3 at the time.
Rural Lesbian, I totally agree with you! Owning your own business, of any kind, means kissing all your free time goodbye and saying hello to constant stress. No thank you. The concept is always nicer than the reality.
Weese, my sweety likes the idea of a B&B too. I’m a little too attached to my steady paycheck and paid vacations to want to go for it.
I would love a coffee/breakfast...so we can have time for “us” as well.
The day we no longer have time for us is the day we need to stop and reevaluate what we’re doing.
Dont do it. My BIL owns and runs a hoagie shop and it seems to be a nightmare. And how hard can it be to prepare sub sandwiches??
If I had to choose, I would go with a fine dining establishment and sit back and rake in the bucks
