If it smells like mildew, it could be the a/c / vents.  If the a/c isn’t used for a while, and you finally turn it on, it’ll smell weird like mildew...sometimes the smell will go away on its own, sometimes you might have to take it in.  But yeah, had that one happen before.

My car actually does produce that smell when I turn my AC off. That eventually goes away though, and it isn’t too unpleasant. I wonder if something could crawl into one of the air vents and, you know, die? Eww.

I suppose a small animal or could work its way up under the hood and croak..when was the last time you popped your hood? lol

In my case, it was just standing water (there was a tiny leak...it’s also why my a/c wasn’t blowing as cold as it used to).

Doesn’t matter now, though...I have a shiny new car with that awesomely awesome new car smell (of course, it only came at the expense of the front end of my last car)...

Ooh new cars certainly are awesomely awesome. I’ve been thinking of trading mine in too, but it’s still in great shape. Just need to change the hoses. 7-year-old hoses tend to be a bit brittle.

did you check the trunk? One i put wet sneakers in the trunk of my car (had jumped in a bog or something, had to change) and forgot. “What’s that car in my smell?” I asked one day.  My friends laughed and laughed and didn’t help. Months later...found the shoes.
Needless to say, i store a lot of junk in my trunk.

She said she already checked her trunk in her post.  wink

I had a family of mice make a nest in the insulation under the hood of my car, they died and it stunk for weeks before I found it. I also had an a/c leak once that made the carpet on the passenger side smell like low tide. I hope you find your smell soon!

Did it get really cold there?  You could have had a rodent get in to your hood or upholstery and then die.

One time I watched this thing on urban legends on TLC where this guy bought a car that had a dead body in it for like 2 weeks and the smell came back. It freaked me out......

Christie | 01.10.2008 | 6:18 AM

Gah, how does a human body not get noticed?? Don’t you do a full inspection on it before you buy it? *heebie jeebies*

Avi, it did get fairly cold, but considering it’s LA and ice never formed, it probably wasn’t *that* cold.

Otter, I should probably have my AC checked out since it does have a particular smell when I turn it off after using it. “Low tide” is a fairly good description of it. No wonder I don’t mind that smell.

Meep, Danalyn was right, I did mention checking the trunk. But that’s ok, sometimes I don’t pay attention either.  grin

You should check between the console and the seats. A few months ago that happened to my car and it took a month for me to figure out that someone had dropped food there.

does it smell acrid? acidic sort of. that would be the decaying mouse smell… and once you smell that - you will forever be able to identify it.
mice LOVE cars. it could be ANYwhere. the good news is that if if is a mouse it will begin to dissapate in 3 -4 weeks.

weese | 01.11.2008 | 8:54 AM

Strangely and happily enough, the smell seems to have disappeared on its own. Never figured out what it was.  confused
