If you lack a knowledge of finance, you should acquire some. I’m not sure abut your area but in Toronto, community colleges ran a number of courses in finance for non-financial managers. I took two. I came out knowing how to read a balance sheet, a funds flow document, a statement of profit and loss. It did not make me an accountant but it allowed me to ask intelligent questions to accountants. If you are going to be a co-owner of a company, you need not be an accountant but you need a basic understanding about how it works.
I have absolutely nothing constructive to add. But this is fantastic!! Very exciting!! Good Luck!!!
I have absolutely nothing helpful to suggest, but I will think happy thoughts and toss them in your direction! Congrats!
That is really super cool and totally exciting.
Some friends and I came up with a really cool mulit-player online game, and we got a pretty good start on the the ideas and the story line, but then it died. Since I’m not a programmer, or a graphics person, I’m just a story person, I can’t do much to move it forward. It’s exciting to hear someone else was able to see their idea to creation.
If you need any game testers, let me know. I’m not an expert, but I have friends who do beta testing for games like Warhammer, and DAOC all the time. I’d be willing to give a look too, but I’m just your average female, late 30’s sometimes gamers.
Sounds exciting! :D
Dave, this is actually going to be utilizing an existing platform, so Sourceforge would not be a resource for us. Good idea though!
Bobolink, I had to take some finance and economics classes in college. Hated ‘em with a passion. I’ll leave it up to the business guru to worry about that stuff.
Tons, Otter and Liane, thanks for the well wishes! The excitement is amazing. I think the group is kind of amazed we’ve gotten this far. We are really fortunate that one of the group works with venture capitalists on a regular basis!
Zoe, it will likely be about two years, realistically, before we’ll get to beta testing, but I’ll keep you in mind! Our primary demographic is actually mature, well-to-do adults, generally over 30. We’re aiming broader than that, but you definitely fit into our primary demographic.
One word (kind of two):
Sourceforge.
I (still!) have no idea where to start with these brilliant ideas that I have at 3am, but Sourceforge is the best way get fresh ideas started. Also (for those skin-flint pirates) Sourceforge projects are free to the End User, which is the best way to distribute a good piece of software.
It allows other techies to spot your stupid dumb-ass mistakes, even if your sure they weren’t yours (see the Azureus 2.4 comments!)
I have nothing technicaly useful to contribute at this stage, but if you have a problem, sourceforge will give you 3000+people working on it for free.
The community kicks general ass…
It should also be noted (to all the sourceforge Newbies) that they work solely on donations, so please do if you can!
Best of luck your project and I look forward to seeing a beta.
Let me know if I can help (my general area is TCP/IP, Cisco networks and C++)
