If you can get it, look for “Up the Organization” a book by Robert Townsend. It was written in 1968 and reissued in 2007. To this day, it remains THE book on how to run a profitable, people-centred conpany. You may also be able to find his revised book “Further Up the Organization” but to my knowledge it has not been reprinted. My father gave me “Up the Organization” when I got my first management job and I gave “Further Up the Organization” to my son when he got his first management job. I used it as my bible and usually had the happiest and most productive departments in the companies I worked for. My people were constantly being poached by other departments.

I often wonder how the higher-ups get their jobs.  So many of them are totally undeserving.
I’m in agreement with Bobolink. Happy employees are productive employees.
How people don’t see that is beyond me.

The important thing is that you’re still enjoying it.  If you hated it, too, that would be a big issue.

Bobolink, thanks for the info! I’ll have to look into that book, maybe even discreetly leave a copy on the CEO’s desk. The man seems genuine in his desire to succeed, but he’s still really young (younger than me!) and likely pretty green.

J, I’m a firm believer in “It’s not what you know, it’s who you know.” It’s likely why I’ve never gotten anywhere “important”. I don’t know anyone. (That and lack of ambition, heh.)

Avi, definitely true! So long as the work remains enjoyable, I can put up with a lot.

I don’t want to get into a general business discussion but there is a serious crisis in management in North America (I’m a Canadian). Managers are encouraged not to look beyond the next quarterly statement. Managers have forgotten why they are there and what responsibilities they hold. They have no long term vision and no longer see a company as a group of individuals striving for a common goal.

Di, I guess you were thinking of a rosy anterior, LOL!

Bobolink, I think you’re right! Everyone is in it for themselves. BTW I ordered the book and will start reading it soon.
