if you are not completely comfortable using a chainsaw the very last thing you want to do is use the tip of the saw to do anything. using the tip of the saw can cause kickback. kickback...is bad.

my advice would be just leave them alone. they will get lighter and lighter as they dry out. they will also rot either way (whether you hollow them or not) if you plan to leave them untreated.
so move them to a nice location, get a cool drink and have a seat.
