The most complaints I keep hearing about are the pushy sales people trying to sell timeshares. It’s like their livelihood and they’ll pester you wherever you go.
I watched this thing on E! about all these tourists that were swindled or murdered...not to scare you or anything. Just make sure you pick a safe hotel even if it’s more money.
I read this one review where a group of friends went clubbing. One place offered them 20 free shots, so they went in and took the shots. Then they were presented with the bill. They were strong-armed into paying, then after paying, the bouncer later pushed one guy against the wall and insisted he pay again. Sounds really scary indeed. Luckily we don’t care for bars or the night scene. We’re sticking to the touristy areas frequented by police and other gringos like us.
I assume if you avoid that stuff you’ll probably be safe, also never go anywhere alone.
Are you kidding me? I’m sticking to my spanish-speaking honey like… like a fly on honey! bzz bzz
There you go! I know if I ever went to a foreign country I’d be eaten alive, good thing for my fiance.
Try tripadvisor.com and priceline. You might be able to find some good rates on usually more expensive hotels.
Two words for ya:
All Inclusive
It will look like a little more upfront as far as per night hotel, blah blah blah. But it’s way easier on the budget and you can actually plan. Because if you don’t want to you don’t have to spend another DIME once you get there.
I stayed there, and it was gorgeous. Out of all the work trips I go on with hubby, that is still by far my favourite hotel. And the pool is absolutely amazing - hugest I’ve seen. The thing I liked about the place too, is that it’s far removed from the ‘night scene’ and so it’s pretty quiet at night. At least it was when I went.
I should put my cancun pics on flickr for you.
Does the Hilton not offer any kind of deals?
And, you’d probably be good with five days there, rather than seven. Up to you.
Av, TripAdvisor did have a good collection of reviews. It’s just so hard to pick one.
Miss Britt, thanks for the tip. We were trying to decide if we want just the room or the all-inclusive thing. We’re not sure how much time will be spent in the actual hotel. We do want to see Chichen-Itza and maybe snorkel a little.
J, it does sound like a nice place. And it’s a real hotel versus a timeshare that they’re going to try to sell to you as soon as you step through the door.
I had fun when I went. I stayed at the Camino Real hotel. It was nice and the beds were comfy. I’m not sure how much it was though.
I agree with Britt. Look in to an all inclusive deal. I’ve never done it, but my co-worker does it all the time and always saves tons of money.
Haven’t gone to Cancun, but all the other times we’ve gone to in Mexico, the beds were always the same. Horribly hard. Like a mattress on a concrete slab (as God as my witness, that was what it was.) And these were not cheap rooms! I’d look into the all-inclusive ones, too. Club Med has a resort there.
Good luck on your trip planning! I love trip planning and traveling. I also love packing.
Also be careful of all of the scams and that other stuff that people deal with when it comes to Cancun. I’ve heard too many horror stories.
