Hooray, you really get it! Aside from conferences and seminars, are there local professional organizations in your area of expertise with regular meetings? If so, participate. Volunteer for sub-committees. Let people see you working in a cooperative informal setting. Even better if you can offer practical solutions to problems. Working with people who share your ideas and knowledge will help overcome shyness.

Haha, this is a funny [but interesting] blog. Just stumbled across a previous entry recently, and decided to read around a bit. Wasn’t disappointed. This networking stuff helps a lot.
