Haha, this is a funny [but interesting] blog. Just stumbled across a previous entry recently, and decided to read around a bit. Wasn’t disappointed. This networking stuff helps a lot.
I have to network in real estate. Sometimes it is just fake conversation. I think we all must have fake conversation at one point in our lives just to be pleasant and deal with people.
Hooray, you really get it! Aside from conferences and seminars, are there local professional organizations in your area of expertise with regular meetings? If so, participate. Volunteer for sub-committees. Let people see you working in a cooperative informal setting. Even better if you can offer practical solutions to problems. Working with people who share your ideas and knowledge will help overcome shyness.
