Funny - I was born in the 80’s and I hate most of that decade’s music, but the stuff from the 70’s? I <3 it ever so much! Totally my dad’s fault, though, because he played that stuff ALL THE TIME and it grew on me… kind of like a cyst.
For the record, I adored Michael Jackson before he was a freak, too.
And my type-in-word is “gay”... is that about Michael Jackson or about my choice in music? Darnit.
I find it interesting that I feel exactly the same as you about my 30’s.
Came into my own. Perfect phrase.
You know..as a kid and in my early teen years I was an absolute social reject...but once I got into my late teens and early 20’s I became more comfortable with myself. That also made me less of a retard in social situations.
I was still in elementary school in the 80s, but I have to say, that is my favorite decade. Oooh, speaking of the 80s...I just <i>had</i> to export the “New Wave” songs from The Sims 2. I mean, c’mon! Depeche Mode and Kajagoogoo?
I hated the 90s. That was high school and post high school days. I was fucking stupid. But the kids around me were even dumber. Kids (or adults, for that matter) don’t like when you call them stupid and laugh in their faces. The mid 90s was also when I started developing my shitty html skills...and what little social life I ever had gone down the drain (but I actually like it this way).
Oh yeah, the 90s was also when I met the Mr...and I still blame him for robbing me of my twenties. lol.
I’m slowly starting to hate this decade, too. But mostly because of the rut I got myself stuck into...without anyone to blame but myself.
Aaah...no violins here...I hate strings. Just silence, please?
Great summary. I think you still have some good decades ahead.
One of the few things about aging to which I’m looking forward is reminiscing about this decade. I plan on saying things like, “I remember the Iraq war pretty clearly. It was twenty-ought-three when the war started...”
So yeah. These years are “the oughts.”
I like this post...for me it was the late 80 and 90’s I had lots of friends and we had big hair, you can say in high school we were the cool group. I had fun and I enjoyed my high school years. And I loved “New Wave”...but yes I specially love it now, I have a great job, my own house, friends and most important the love of a great person.
I guess every decade is special in it’s way…
Well, I’m in my forties and for me THIS decade rocks! At least that’s how the kids put it.
The ‘70’s (my formatives) live inside me every day-not the *fashion* so much as the feel and flavors. I had my kids in the 80’s and so that decade-and pretty much the 90’s were a blur-so as you might imagine-I’m finally able to stop and smell the java-just a bit.
I like your time line-I’ve been thinking of coming up with something similar as a gift to my daughter for her 21st birthday!
Interesting post! I may have to do something similar myself… although being born in October 1979 I remember even LESS from the 70s than you do
As for what to call this century… I’ve heard “The Noughties” put forth as a suggestion, and have to admit I quite light that one
Dayum you are old!
Mike, much as I might like to complain about some things, everything has certainly worked out for me.
Mrs. S, you hate 80s music?? Say it isn’t true! *plugs ears* lalalala!
J, maturity takes its sweet time to get here, but once it does, everything feels just right.
Donna, I know exactly how that feels. I can hold my own in social situations now as well.
Tech Wench, Sims 2 had that music in there? That’s cool! I’m still stuck on Sims 1 on my PC. I played Sims 2 briefly on Xbox, but I didn’t notice the music. Looks like I missed out!
Yellojkt, that’s for sure!
Joe, “The oughts”? I don’t get it. I think I’m being dense.
Mar, I think you’re right. Every decade does have something special about it. Each one is a little different.
Deborah, I can well imagine the sense of freedom you have now. Raising kids can definitely become a blur.
Vixen,
Oops, my bad. It’s “aught,” a synonym for “zero” or “nothing.” The only two contexts I’ve ever heard anyone use “aught” is in “double aught buckshot” and when describing the years between 1900 and 1909. My grandfather would sometimes say he was born in “nineteen aught five.”
It looks the the path taken worked out well for you. (And you’re absolutely right on the fashion/music of the 70’s)
