For picking up dog poop I am extremely environmentally unfriendly. I used specially made little dog poop bags - they even have paw prints on them. Maybe one day they will make biodegradable poop bags, but until that day I will keep on using poop bags.

I do however use tote bags or as we call them in Australia - green bags to do my shopping. I am big on using my green bags. But for dog poop, I am not reusing a baggie, no way.

I use plastic grocery bags to line the trash cans in my kitchen, living room, bathroom and bedroom. I will really miss them. I try to reuse as much as possible. I have cloth tote bags for groceries but have switch back to plastic when I ran out of trash can liners.

Bobolink, we both do the same thing! I use plastic grocery for most of my trash lining needs as well. And when I run low on my stockpile I’m not as diligent about using the tote bags.

Riayn, I guess there isn’t much choice yet. I’ve heard of biodegradable bags, but that’s about it. I also thought about paper poop bags, but that might not work so well if the walk is longer than usual. gulp

They do make biodegradable poop bags for doggies, but they are not cheap. How ‘bout using newspaper?

You could buy these poop bags, which are biodegradable, from poopbags.com.

After trying to figure out just how I fucked up my link, I see that you disabled HTML. Guess you can still cut and paste.

Sorry zoe, thanks to &$#*$%# spammers I disabled links, which has lessened the spamments somewhat. Thanks for the link!

Otter, I guess I could use the grocery store circulars for that purpose. The shinier the better… I don’t want that stuff seeping through, bleah!

it is a dilemma… but it seems such a shame to wrap up such a wonderful biodegradable fertilizer in plastic.

at home ...we just toss it out into the back (compost). But when we walk on the trail, which is in the woods, i carry a small shovel -like a little gardening one - and dig a little hole (well big hole… our dog is big)off the side of the trail. pop in the poop and cover it up. wala.

I suppose if you walk along a suburban street and do that in someone’s lawn - it may upset them. smile

I know, I’m usually pretty enviromentally friendly, but I use the grocery bags for dog poop, too, and also to line the little bathroom trashcans. I also use them for wrapping leftovers. Food, not garbage.
So I save on actually buying MORE plastic bags and I figure I’m recycling the grocery bags, right?
It’s a dilemma.

Weese, that’s really good of you! And you’re right, the neighbors don’t really want my little mutts’ contributions to fertilizing their lawns.

Annie, those plastic bags are so useful! I use them for food and bathroom trash cans as well. Without them, it would get pretty gross trying to take out the garbage.
