I’d say the answer to your question is very market dependent. I have had Directv for about 6 years and I freaking love it, with one exception, I can’t get all the networks. It’s some battle between the networks and Directv and it is really frustrating for the those of us in the limbo markets. But, since you are probably in a major market, I don’t think that will be an issue for you.
As for lost reception, we had a blizzard a few days ago and never lost reception once. If there is torrential rain, we might lose reception briefly, but it doesn’t happen often.
I can’t answer for Dish network, who now owns Directv, but I can tell you the Directv has excellent costumer service. Most problems can be fixed right over the phone, 24/7.
My recommendation is always going to be a satellite provider.

Thanks for the info! It sounds pretty good. Dish’s website had a little checkbox for receiving local channels ($5 extra!) so that likely won’t be an issue. Considering all the complaints I’ve been hearing about Time Warner cable, I think a switch might be in order.

I have no input on this at all. Would you believe I still get my television by pulling it out of the air with an old school aerial?

Out of the air? Ooh… you are old school, man. Hardcore!

We have a dish on our house from the old member but have always done cable and I LOVE DVR! If it weren’t for DVR right now I’d be missing out on CSI and GH.

I lost a lot of geek cred with that admission, didn’t I?

Robin, there’s a big ol’ dish sitting on our roof too, but we’ve never used it. I think it’s causing the leak in our roof. Stupid thing.

Joe, not necessarily. Is there like aluminum foil, coat hangers and other household items arranged in a way to enhance reception? The good geeks find ways to enhance their enjoyment without spending a fortune.
