My kitties all got a bath the day we got them. Sort of like an initiation thing. We don’t let them go outside so we’ve never had a flea problem. The baths were always pretty effective.

Try Wal-Mart, Target and Home Depot for huge refill bottles of citronella.

YAY my verification word was “gay” HEEE

Jer | 08.23.2006 | 11:15 AM

I get my kitties’ Advantage from Australia, too (no doubt the same website as you do). It truly is the cheapest around.

I try to keep Advantage on all the kitties during the hot months, when the fleas are at their worst. I also use some Fleabusters powder around the house if things start getting really bad.

Whitters | 08.23.2006 | 11:54 AM

Heather, keeping them indoors is a good idea, especially for cats. (They like to get into everything!)

What Home Depot carries is the torch oil, which I think is a different from the citronella essential oil I’m looking for.

Hmm, Fleabusters… I’ll have to look into that.

For my dog we have some prescription thing that comes in a tube we have to put on the back of his neck every month. He has never had a flea.

Fleas live in the carpet and just jump on the animal when they are hungry. You have to bomb the house with fleas spray and then dip the animals at the same time or else the vicious cycle will continue.

yellojkt | 08.23.2006 | 12:03 PM

Maybe you can just put vaseline all over your cats, that way the fleas will suffocate and well..., I don’t know, it seems like a good idea, I’m babbling, I know. YAY, my new verification word is sex, first it was gay, now it’s SEX. I “heart” this blog.

Jer | 08.23.2006 | 12:28 PM

OOh, tough with the fleas. You might have to exterminate the house too to keep them from coming back on them. sad

Ours haven’t gotten fleas and they’re outside all the time. I wonder why...*ponders*

Since we got rid of the carpeting in the house, flea infestations are likely not going to be a problem. I’m guessing maybe they pick them up when we take them out for walks. They LOVE to stick their noses into bushes and walk through tall grass.

Geeky Dragon Girl | 08.23.2006 | 2:18 PM

okay in all seriousness, there is a powder and a shampoo made by Adams, it comes in a blue bottle with a red and white label. I’ve had to use it before, my college apartment was infested with fleas by the previous tenants pets. It worked like a charm. Try it.

We use Frontline for our dogs. It’s much easier than Advantage, but I don’t know if it works for cats.

Avitable | 08.23.2006 | 5:59 PM

I usually just shout at the fleas until they run away in terror.

Joefish | 08.23.2006 | 6:07 PM

How is Frontline easier to use than Advantage? Isn’t it basically the same stuff? You squirt the tube between their shoulder blades, the skin absorbs it, and fleas go away. BTW no cats here, just dogs.

Geeky Dragon Girl | 08.23.2006 | 7:14 PM

Vaccuum, and vaccuum a LOT (and, if you happen to be like me, learn the correct spelling of ‘vaccuum’ and memorize it so you don’t look like an idiot when typing to someone else to do said chore) because this gets the eggs and adults that fall off the pets and into the carpet/onto the floor. And make sure you empty the vaccuum frequently so the fleas don’t just get back out.

Otherwise, I got nothing.

Mrs. S | 08.23.2006 | 8:03 PM

I knew you had dogs, but was thinking cats for some reason.

I thought Advantage was a weekly solution, not a monthly one? Maybe it is the same stuff.

There’s only one solution: shave them. smile

Avitable | 08.24.2006 | 3:06 AM

Frontline is actually a little better than Advantage. Frontline will last for up to 2 months if you are only using it for flea control, if you are also using it to protect against ticks then you will need to use it once a month. If you keep your dogs Frontlined then you shouldn’t have to worry about bombing your house, not that you would need to since you no longer have carpeting, but fleas will seek out the largest furry mamal, which would be your dogs. So if you keep them Frontlined the fleas in your house will eventually all die out.

zoe | 08.24.2006 | 4:27 AM

Mrs S, since carpeting isn’t an issue, neither is vaccuuming. But you’re right, that is a damn hard word to spell correctly!

Avitable, I think it’s time to break out the industrial razor…

Zoe, I didn’t know that. Maybe I’ll try Fontline next time (I already ordered the Advantage).

Geeky Dragon Girl | 08.24.2006 | 5:55 AM

We haven’t even begun to try to deal with it, right now I’m freaked out that when I pet them my hands get really REALLY itchy.

I’m starting to wish I’d never let them out, but at the same time I don’t.

I can’t imagine trying to bath Aurora, we wouldn’t survive it.

Robin | 08.24.2006 | 7:32 AM

nope nope...if you are getting bitten like that and you have bathed your pets - they are in your house. you will not be able to get rid of them with Advantage alone. you must completly go through the house. leaving even a couple behind can lead to an infestation.
you will need to bomb, wash all bedding and slipcovers. and vacuum in, around and inbetween your mattresses and furniture cushions. do you have baseboard heat? be sure to vacuum that out as well. you can also get an indoor spray to use around the edges of the rooms and in furniture crevices.

weese | 08.24.2006 | 8:52 AM

have you tried frontline. did you know you can buy a frontline dose for a large dog and it is the same potency as the stuff in the viles for the small dogs or cats. use an eye dropper and treat them all for the price of one. I do all my dogs 3 and cats 5 with 2 large dog doses!! good luck

AKM | 08.25.2006 | 5:47 AM

Afraid I can’t be much help on this one, my flea remedy is the “having no pets one”. smile

Hope you find something that does the trick!

Exquisite Chick | 08.25.2006 | 7:47 AM

I think someone already said it but I get the huge bottles at Wal-Mart.

Dramedy Girl | 08.25.2006 | 12:44 PM

SALT, lots of salt. It’s cheap, don’t skimp, put it everywhere in the house (not on pets), leave it for a day or two then vacuum(correct spelling) it up. The salt DESSICATES (drys up) the little buggers. My mom had an infestation and set off two bombs to no avail. Vet suggested the salt trick and it worked in days. Also if you set out a bowl of water with a couple drops of dish soap in it then leave a flashlight shined at the bowl(in a dark room) the fleas will jump in the bowl and drown because the soap breaks the surface tension on the water and drowns them.
