Barb probably knows, but does anyone else?

Not that I really care about sports or anything, but I couldn’t be a smug know-it-all if I didn’t actually know it all. So, what I want to know, and am slightly embarrassed that I don’t, is this: What the heck is a pickup game? I hear it all the time when a bunch of guys go to play basketball or something, or when my renter goes to play a pickup hockey game (and kicks some ass in the process)... what exactly does that mean?

A cursory Google search came up with nothing but ways to find pickup games, but nothing actually defined what the heck they are. Anyone care to enlighten me?
