Something for the gay community

I got a request today to help spread the word of a lesbian-owned online store. So I figured, why not? Help a sister out. Gay pride and all that stuff. But more than anything I’m doing it because 1) she already wrote up a press release, and 2) I couldn’t think of anything else to post this morning. So here it is, my community service effort:

SLINC GLBT MERCHANDISE GRAND RE-OPENING

Detroit, MI – December 6, 2006- The owner of the GLBT online merchandise store, SLINC, would like to announce the online stores grand re-opening. In 2003 Kelly Leszczynski opened SLINC as a creative outlet and way to make some extra cash. In the past 3 years the site has grown to over 400 designs on over 50 different products. Leszczynski blames her creative itch and her interesting friends for many of the original designs seen on the website. “When my friends and I get together inevitably someone will say something that is T-shirt worthy.” She said.

SLINC does currently cater its designs towards the lesbian community, but Leszczynski is currently expanding the store’s gay, bisexual, and transgender sections. “We’re always looking for new design ideas.” Leszczynski said, “Visitors to the website are encouraged to email me their ideas. If I use them I’ll send them some free products of their choice!” There are so many designs to choose from that you are bound to find something that is perfect for you or a friend.

“I like to use the motto ‘Your chest is your billboard’,” said the SLINC shop owner, “The shops political section has been a huge hit for that reason alone. Many people like to wear their views on their chest” SLINC doesn’t just dabble in GLBT designs either. There is a huge selection of non sexual preference related designs in the shops More Than Queer section. This section contains a few wonderfully inspiring designs involving the all American mullet.

Although T-shirts are the sites biggest product seller SLINC also offers pins, stickers, and GLBT Pride Art. “The art section allows me to be a bit more serious with my designs.” said Leszczynski. Some of the websites best selling designs proclaim, “If the trailer’s rockin’ don’t come a knockin’” and a cute little rainbow colored dinosaur aptly named “Dykeosourus Rex.”

In honor of the grand re-opening SLINC will feature a new design every day until the end of the year. The prices on the products available on the featured design will be marked down for a full twenty-four hours. That means T-shirts for $9.99 and Hoodies for $24.99! SLINC is a great place for holiday gift shopping under $25.00. SLINC offers discounts when you buy products in bulk and will customize any design they have available just for you.

Turning off Autoplay in Firefox

I found the answer! The most widespread solution seems to be to install some kind of plugin to prevent Firefox from autoplaying media, but this is not the solution I wanted. Not everyone, including myself, is going to want to install it. Luckily I found a solution that gets right to the source of the problem. The bug is that Firefox doesn’t recognize “autostart=false” (if you’re using the EMBED tag) or name=autostart value=false (if you’re using the OBJECT tag).  It uses the boolean/bit value for “false” instead, which is zero.

This means the fix was simple. In my code I merely change “false” to “0” and Firefox suddenly recognizes it. Silly browser. If other browsers are presenting such problems, please let me know so I can fix those too, thanks! I only have IE and Firefox installed on this machine.

A couple of updates

I’ve got a bit of good news to share! It’s about my squatter situation… there’s finally been some movement on that front. Here’s a Random Pointless Recording to tell you about it (you can either download it by clicking on the link or listen by using the media player, I’m all about choices):

Also, an update on the tie situation… look!

The tie did not mysteriously disappear, but part of it seems to have. As you well know, I cannot let this by without speculating on what happened…

  • Someone was swinging on it and the thing couldn’t take his weight (which means hanging yourself with it would not work).
  • Someone was really curious about what it looked like inside a tie.
  • Stoopid maintenance people were told to take the tie down, but they couldn’t find their ladder and decided to yank on it until it came loose.
  • Dave‘s aliens really did come by to pick up a batch of humans, and the tie got caught in the tractor beam.

*Warning, geeky stuff ahead*
Barb had pointed out that the media player was playing my MP3 recording automatically. I hate hate HATE auoplaying audio and video. It’s wrong and intrusive and I’m sorry. I’m assuming it wasn’t in IE because it worked normally for me. I did some quick research and found out that the EMBED tag is not standard HTML at all. It’s some mutant tag that Netscape developed and IE uses (for some weird reason). The OBJECT tag is the correct standard to use, but IE doesn’t implement it correctly. For whoever is interested, I found this article that showed me one way to code the OBJECT tag so all browsers will use it correctly.

If the audio still starts automatically for you, please do let me know, and tell me which browser you are using. Thanks!

Random and pointless

This morning I thought it would be a brilliant idea to try another recording. It’s significantly more willy nilly than the first one, but slightly more interesting. Here, have a listen:

As I was walking through the parking garage this morning, I enountered this random tie just hanging from one of the pipes.

It was strange and out of place (like me at a concert), and I wonder who put it there and why. I’ve come up with a short list of possibilities:
  • Someone had a really bad day at the office and decided to end it. They removed the body but left the tie.
  • Someone got tired of always forgetting where they parked.
  • It’s an odd way to present a gift. (This person needs to be reminded that ties are, in general, lame gifts.)
  • Someone actually did get it as a gift and hated it.
  • It’s a test to see how many blogs this tie shows up in.

What do you think?

The voice of insanity

This lovely new Archos gadget of mine is able to make voice recordings pretty easily. Oh the possibilities. I could become a podcaster! Well, that’s assuming I had something to say. And let’s face it, I sound like a retard when I talk because my thoughts don’t exactly flow in a smooth straight line. But it’s something to think about.

In the meantime, you can listen to my first test recording using this thing. It’s reeeeaally fascinating. I may need to up the volume on it, what do you guys think, is it too quiet?

What's it worth?

While we wait for Miss Can-I-Stay-Here-For-Free-While-I-Do-Drugs to get the hell out (yeah I know you’re tired of hearing about her. Believe me, so am I. The bitch still hasn’t moved out yet and is determined to wait until the final notice from the Sheriff.), we’re thinking about the most important part of selling a house—price. Price it too high and nobody wants it. Pricing it too low is less of a danger I think, because buyers will climb over each other to bid higher in order to get it. Maybe. Not sure in this market.

Anyway, while we wait for the time we can get a realtor and actually start this process, we can get an online property appraisal just to get an idea. It’s neat because you can look up neighbor’s houses too. We were doing that saying things like, “I knew that place was a dump” and “That house is worth that much??” Heh, fun stuff.

I'm in love (with a gadget)

I’ve been eyeing, reading reviews about and shopping around for a video/MP3 player for weeks now. My original intent was to get one for my sweety for Christmas. The little 128MB player she’s using now is a little, well, small. When you’re at the gym you might get tired of the same 25 songs.

Finally an opportunity came up. A brand new Archos Gmini 402 Digital Media Player was offered at $160—about $80 off the normal price I’d been seeing them at. I had to get it. 20GB of storage space completely blows 128MB away, don’t you think?

Well it arrived yesterday. I opened the package and fell in love. Yes it was supposed to be a Christmas gift, but I wasn’t going to wrap it up and wait till the holiday, are you nuts? I was going to charge it up and get it ready for her to use. But I loved it too much to give it up. I asked her if I could keep it, and I would [one day] replace it with an even better model.  The screen was a little small for her liking anyway, and battery life wasn’t stellar. But it can play games and, my favorite part of all, you don’t need any frickin’ proprietary software to tranfer files.

[begin rant]
I hate iPods. Everything is proprietary and works only with iPod accessories. You have to use iTunes to transfer stuff. There are third-party programs available so you don’t have to use iTunes, but why do I have to run them when I should be able to attach the thing as a removable hard drive? Drag and drop is so simple, why complicate it with anything else? I was looking at the new Zune too, but they’re worse. Not only do you have to use their special software to transfer files, you have to have Windows XP. My old home computer is still running Windows 2000, so it’s useless. Why exclude segments of your market? Well forget them. They’re just looking for yuppies with money to burn on accessories anyway.
[/end rant]

So anyway, back to my Archos. It’s so cute and feels like a portable game player when I hold it. I wrote up a complete and detailed review, if you’d like to check it out.
