What's that beeping?
Manager: Anyone else hear that beeping? Did you hear a beep?
Coworker: I heard nothing.
Manager: I can’t be the only one, you heard it, didn’t you?
Me: Yeah, actually I did.
Manager: Oh thank god. I thought I was going crazy.
Me: I personally think it’s the Mothership checking up on you, waiting for your status report.
Manager: Actually it’s the Lojack I had installed in my head.
Me: Or maybe your batteries are low.
Manager: Ha! That must be it. I do feel a bit run down.
Isn’t it so cool when you can joke around with managers like this? Some people need to learn this lesson and not take themselves so seriously.

Compulsive buying
I buy stuff I think we need. Most people do. The weird thing is, some people have a slightly distorted perception of what exactly they need, and how much. When I was installing the knobs into my mom’s kitchen cabinets, I opened one and saw this…
That space was stuffed with every conceivable brand and style of plastic bags. Sandwich bags, freezer bags, recloseable bags, gallon size, pint size, quart size, Glad, Ziploc, and various store brands. I was amazed. I stared for awhile before moving aside some of the ones in front, only to find more in the back. Wow. There’s being prepared, and then there’s… this.

My mom is so happy
I’m at my mom’s house! I finally got new tires and made it over here. Thank goodness a friend convinced her to get DSL. She’s at an appointment right now so that gives me a few hours to geek around. Well, not really. I promised to install some knobs on her kitchen cabinet doors because I’m so handy and helpful. But I couldn’t very well start that without whipping up a quick blog entry!
She finally bought a new couch set. The old one is still here, with boards underneath the cushions because the springs have longs since given out. I know exactly where I got my stinginess from. Scarily enough I can see myself doing the same thing if left to my own devices. Thank goodness my sweety would be there to show me how apalling it really looks. The new couches are quite nice. I really like the microfiber material. Unfortunately, she’s chosen to “preserve” the newness by covering them with bedsheets. Not slipcovers, bedsheets. What better way to make a new couch look old than draping bedsheets over them? It’s not like kids live here anymore. Who’s going to be spilling stuff on it? Oh well, whatever makes her feel better.
Anyway, I’ve got a nice loooong list of computery things my mom wants to learn. I found out that she has two other friends who also want to learn computery things from me. So I’m going to be teaching a class! But I don’t mind. What good is knowledge if you can’t share it? I may not have patience for traffic, but I oddly have patience for showing people who aren’t so quick to pick up technology.
Okay, enough chit-chat. I have things to do and only two days to do them!

What a brat
I was helping my sweety with dinner this evening. My specialty is prep—chopping everything. The cooking part I’m not so great at, but that’s okay. I’m still good for something. The following conversation ensues…
Me: Do you want these onions diced or how do you want them cut?
Her: Don’t go like this when you look at me. *makes a weird winking/blinking face*
Me: Did I do that? Well if I’m blinking it’s because of these onions.
Her: ...
Me: You’re being a brat, aren’t you?
Her: When am I not?
Me: Oh yeah, good point.
You know who else is a brat? My renter. Okay maybe not, but I’m sure she has her bratty moments.

Musical Thoughts
Ever notice how music that you don’t like all sound the same? For example, I’m not a big fan of salsa music. I can distinguish particular artists when I hear them, like Marc Anthony or Celia Cruz, but most of that music sounds the same to me. Same trumpets, bongos and other percussions. I hate heavy metal and it all sounds like ear-grating noise to me.
Techno, trance and other forms of electronica are my favorite types of music, yet a lot of people tell me it all sounds the same to them. The same beat over and over and over. But I don’t hear it the same way. I hear the different nuances and changes in tunes. I like the stuff, so I can easily distinguish one song over another. Those same two songs will sound like the exact same thump-thump-thump to someone else who’s not into it.
This was just one of the random thoughts I had today while driving in my car. Not all that fascinating, but it was one of the few coherent ones I had. The rest… well, let’s just say they scatter like roaches when the spotlight hits them.

Public Service Announcement: Popcorn
It seems popcorn burning is a very common occurance. I’ll admit, even I have burned popcorn at least once in the microwave, but not to the point where it smelled up the entire room. This is entirely avoidable, no matter how strong the microwave is.
Yes the microwave has a popcorn button, but it has no way of knowing when your popcorn is actually done. It’s just a preset amount of time for people who one one-touch convenience. Once it starts cooking, you can leave the room for about a minute. No more! Come back in a minute because that’s when the popping starts and you want to be there for that. When you hear the popping start to slow down, you cannot leave or burning is imminent. When there are 2 or more seconds in between pops turn it off. Turn it off! Now! Hurry!
If you wait for every last kernel to pop, the ones that popped first will burn. And smell… stinking up the whole bag, and the whole room. So don’t do it!
