Don't take the little things for granted

Last night we went to my sweety’s sister’s house to hang out, eat dinner and watch movies. If you recall, her family either doesn’t know about or chooses to ignore our relationship. Despite narrow-minded religious belifs, overall they are good-hearted people and I like them. But when we are with them, we have to act like nothing more than friends.

So we’re watching movies, sitting near each other. We’re so used to our recliners that we start shifting around a lot in the couch, trying to stretch our legs out, bend them, etc. trying to get comfortable. I take this opportunity to touch her hand, oops, by accident. I also rub my foot discreetly against hers. Any little gesture to remind her that, even though we not allowed to touch, the love is still there. It makes me happy to steal these little moments.

I wanted to take this opportunity to remind you, never lose the intimacy. Those of you with honeybuns… go march over there and give him or her a smooch right now. Hold hands in public for me, because I usually don’t have the luxury. Don’t take the little things for granted. Treasure them.

Inflation? Whatever.

My dad used to tell me about the days when he was a boy he could buy a loaf of bread for a nickel. Now you’re lucky if you can find a cheapy store-brand loaf on sale for a dollar. You know, the kind with no nutrients left in it? I’ve never understood inflation. Things just get more and more expensive all the time, and I just don’t get it.

I recently read something that said our money used to be backed by gold and silver, and that the same amount of gold and silver can still buy you the same amount of bread, or whatever, as back in the day when my dad was still a boy. So there are a lot of companies that tell you you should invest in gold, platinum or silver. Why? I guess because it’s stable. I dunno. I personally hate finance. I can understand “asset diversification” a bit, but beyond that it gets into complications that I don’t really care about. So in the end I’m just sticking to my 401K and whatever the financial advisors think. Why should I bore myself with such details when someone else can do it better?

Banks and investment houses float the products like home loan and student loan to provide relief to the families. Actually the loan provides the consumer an opportunity to fulfill his dreams about educating and providing his children an adequate shelter. The finance loan uk offers investments in the areas of housing, roads and bridges. The companies providing debt relief loans work and make profits through the larger business houses.

Great for parties?

On the radio this morning the DJ was talking about people who work in retail who get product discounts, and whether or not they share it with friends.  One girl called in and said she worked for some company that made stripper poles. She gets a 90% discount and she said all her friends have one in their living room, some also in their workout room.

WTF? Who puts a stripper pole in their living room? She said it was great for parties. I can well imagine. “Okay everybody, it’s time for pole-dancing karaoke!” Or maybe they could work it into the next strip poker game? You lose a hand and you have to do a pole dance while stripping off the article you lost.

I wonder how similar these poles are to fireman poles? Heh. I said “fireman poles”.

Starting out

Now that I have food in my stomach, I can actually have coherent thoughts. T posted about blog friends and how some people are all whiny that nobody likes them because they get no comments. I’d like to address this by telling the story of how I got started. People who have just started their blog need to know what others have gone through to make blog friends, so this will also double as a public service announcement.

When I first started this thing I had the sense to realize that nobody knew I existed, so of course I wasn’t going to be getting comments. Some folks like Di found me quite by accident while randomly clicking through Blogger sites. Others like Zoe found me while searching for other lesbians.

Most everyone else decided to peek at my site after I sought them out first. Like Zoe, I decided to search for others like myself, so I did a simple Blogger search on the word “lesbian”. That’s when I found One Lazy Lesbian and Suburban Lesbian. I started there. I loved what they had to say and started littering them with comments. Pretty soon they started reading about what else I had to say and I started getting comments myself.

Of course two blogs aren’t enough, so I sifted through their blogrolls. That’s what opened the door to the rest of the blog world. Of course I didn’t like all the blogs they liked, but I liked quite a few of them. So I branched out and started becoming a regular on various sites. Many of them, in turn, became my regulars as well because our personalities were compatible.

It takes time though. Like in real life, people won’t warm up to you instantly. One comment doesn’t make you someone’s friend. Sincerity matters. Reading someone’s blog is a serious investment of time, and people don’t like to waste time. So if you present yourself as a sincerely interested person, the interest will likely be reciprocated. Otherwise, why would they waste time to go check out a complete stranger?

So you whiners better quit your griping about cliques. We were all outsiders once.

Blog tastes

I’ve been noticing that the vast majority of blogs that I frequent belong to people who are married or in an otherwise blissful arrangement.  I can only think of 3 that are single. Maybe this is a stupid observation because most people eventually pair off sometime in their lifetimes.  I’m guessing those in happy relationships will have blogs that I find more pleasant and/or interesting? If I were to suddenly become single (ACK!) would my taste in blogs change? Would I start to become resentful of others’ happiness?

That seems petty, I don’t think I would do that.  Everyone deserves happiness. I was just thinking aloud. This brings me to my next thought (uh oh, thinking before breakfast again, is that safe?) Do you think your taste in blogs has changed? I know I constantly adjust my blogroll to so that it’s useful to me like radio station presets. However I think it’s due more to the fact that blogs do change. People have life-changing events, so of course their blogs will change accordingly. I’ve only been at this since January so I haven’t had that much time to notice such things.

Doesn’t it seem like longer? Have I only been at this for four months? I feel so at home in the blog world. I think my thoughts are getting disjointed. My stomach is flooding my brain with thoughts of food. Must eat now.

Tale of Two Blogs

Over the weekend I decided to start a new blog. Some of you may know that, despite my love of ice cream, I’ve got a serious health nut streak running through me.  A lot of the knowledge that I’ve learned and would like to share are a little too boring to put in this blog. This one is the more personable, all about me me me blog. The new one I’ve started is more focused. I’ll still be sharing thoughts, specifically health related ones, but there will also be sharing of information that I find useful. I decided to call it “Am I Annoying You Yet?” because, let’s face it, some health nuts can be pretty annoying. I don’t expect to get many comments there, but they are, as always, welcome.

I’d also like to take this opportunity to tell you about a blog that isn’t annoying. Bitchet will be staying with us this week. Her name is Bridget, but her snarky alter ego is Bitchet. You don’t mess with her unless you are looking to have a limb severed. Be nice and you get to talk to Bridget. And if you can’t be nice, then, well, you get what you deserve.

I hate movie snobs

Remember when I was complaining about Printer Freak at my office? Well add “movie snob” to his list of annoying traits.

Yesterday a coworker who sits next to him commented, “I watched Aeon Flux over the weekend.” Printer Freak’s immediate reaction was, “Oh god, how was that?” Never having seen the movie, he was already thumbing his nose at it as if it were a Scary Movie or Scooby Doo movie (both of which I enjoyed by the way, but they’re definitely silly).

First of all, it stars Charlize Theron, who kicks ass in every role she plays. In Aeon Flux she plays a woman who kicks everyone’s ass. What’s not to love?? Printer Freak was obviously intimidated and would much prefer a caveman to be kicking everyone’s ass. He’s one of those independent film fanatics, they are the worst movie snobs of all. Yes, okay, I know you’re a smart technical writer who aced all your classes in school, I get it. (He waves that flag at every opportunity too.) There’s this thing I like to call “humility” that you should read about. It means there are opportune moments when you should shut yer yap. In other words, leave my big-budget Hollywood entertainment alone!

This is why SHE does most of the cooking

Last night I cooked dinner. I thought it turned out pretty good, but my sweety thought otherwise. Near bedtime, as I was putting the food away…

Me: I’m going to take this to work tomorrow for lunch, okay?
Her: That’s fine. Eww, did you just fart?
Me: What?? No!
Her: Are you sure? What’s that smell?
Me: I think it’s the chicken.
Her: No wonder I didn’t like it.

*sigh*

I see you pointing your fingers at me and laughing. That’s okay, I brought it upon myself. Well go make yourself useful and visit my renter one last time. It’s her last couple hours left.

"Back to life, back to reality..."

I passed by this elderly lady in the deli downstairs. She was at a table eating her lunch. I heard Soul 2 Soul’s “Back to Life” song playing through the deli’s speakers. Remember that song? I love that song. So did this elderly lady. She was mouthing the words to the song as she picked at her salad.

The 80’s weren’t that long ago, were they?

More silly excitement over ducks

On my way to work this morning I stopped by the bank to deposit a check at the ATM. On my way back to the car I noticed two ducks in the parking lot. Are these the same two ducks I’d seen in my neighborhood before? I looked closer, it looked like them. A green-headed mallard with a brown-speckled female, just like before.

Obviously they needed to stop by the ATM to pick up more cash for their vacation. At least this time they were closer to the beach. Still, they were kinda just hanging out in the parking lot. I’m positive it’s because the mallard refuses to ask for directions.
